I think I will always defend the 1963 Lord of the Flies for FEELING more true to the novel than 1990.
While there are maybe some things I wouldn’t do in modern day (ex. making a kid feel like he’s being attacked, ie. Simon) and some things missing, I think it’s so much more artistic and pointed than 1990. Especially when you take in deleted scenes into account.
Real quick I just want to say that I was in a lord of the flies discord once and we read a couple of the chapters together and recorded them, I recently relistened to random bits and heard some jokes that weren’t totally bad or problematic or anything but not totally PG/kid-friendly either. So I’m just not proud of them and I deleted them. I want to be transparent about that. I’m personally sorry for any less then stellar or maybe not totally appropriate jokes I have made about the book and the characters.
Of course some parts were actually funny and I hope everyone involved felt that it was fun at the time. But if I ever needed to apologize to anyone I would, so feel free to reach out to me if need be.
I personally think the Lord of the Flies community keeps getting better and better at making it safe for everyone and I want to encourage that.
Thank you
((Also disclaimer from what I relistened to we were not going crazy with dirty jokes I just heard one and was instantly filled with regret. But for the most part I heard pretty clean stuff. I do think we were trying our best to keep it light and fun, while discussing the novel.))
